About Art in Your Ear
Batavia, a small city nestled on the banks of the Fox River, about 40 miles west of Chicago, has a high regard for all forms of self-expressions.
The energy that gave rise to numerous windmill factories, limestone quarries and foundries at the turn of the 19th century, has been translated into a 21st century community that honors and supports those who create, whether through the creative arts, or entrepreneurial businesses or volunteerism to raise the quality of life.
2005 saw the translation of this energy into the Art In Your Eye Festival, which in addition to hosting a national fine arts show, encompassed local art exhibitions, children’s activities, a “sculpture adventure” a school of art and music. After 2 successful years, the concept of Art In Your Ear emerged, seeking to go beyond the enjoyable but passive experience of listening to music, to involve those many people who create music. The inaugural Art In Your Ear Amateur Songwriting Contest garnered over 100 entries in 5 categories. Songs were professionally judged, but consistent with aims of supporting artists, the contest culminated with a respectful but fun, sometimes hilarious “recital” on a Saturday evening in August.
Performing by themselves, with friends, or backed by the “Earchestra” the crowd jammed into the patio at O’Brien’s Pub received their “earful of creativity, ranging form subtle but meaningful ballads to lightly mournful tunes in the “Broken-Hearted, Loved Lost and Not Found” category. Besides the winners who took home cash prizes and the treasured plaster ear trophies, everyone had a great time, because as we like to say, “Music is a pretty good invention after all.”
It won’t be any different in year 2.
